Vintage Large Japanese Kokeshi Handmade Wooden Doll

This vintage wooden doll has been carefully hand painted with beautiful detail. Traditionally made as souvenirs to take back to family and friends, the Japanese Kokeshi dolls were mostly used as children's toys but they are also symbols of hope for bountiful harvests, wishes for good luck and fortune, and great appreciation for craftsmanship and culture. The craft of the Kokeshi originates from the Tohoku region of northern Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868).

This unusually large doll stands 9 3/4" high by approximately 3" wide at the head. There are a few small areas where the paint has worn off and some spots on the light wood as seen in the photos but otherwise in good vintage condition. Sorry, the smaller one in the pics has already sold. Made in Japan. Signed.
